Quick Answer: Is Rank Tracking Broken Right Now?

Partly. Since mid-September, Google has been blocking and confusing the automated searches that rank trackers rely on. One of its tactics is serving "poisoned" results: complete, normal-looking search pages with the usual sites swapped out. If your rankings dropped sharply for a day or two in late September or October and then recovered, there's a good chance the drop wasn't real. Check Google Search Console before you react.

What's Happening With Google and Rank Trackers

Search Engine Roundtable reported that Barry Schwartz, relaying Derek Perkins of rank-tracking firm Nozzle, described three tactics Google is using:

  • Wide IP blocking aimed at residential proxy networks
  • A big rise in captchas
  • Fake data injected into search results pages Google suspects are being scraped

Schwartz said the third worries him most, because a blocked search is obvious but a fake one looks just like the real thing.

How Big Is the Problem?

Nozzle's study of poisoned Google SERPs found that since 13 September, 8.0% of the results pages it judged were poisoned. Before that, the baseline was 0.17%. The rate peaked at about 25% between 27 and 29 September, and 77.9% of affected results recovered within three days.

Cyrus Shepard summed up the reaction on X: "Not only is Google working to block AI crawlers, but @nozzleio uncovered evidence that Google is deliberately serving FAKE search results to scrapers."

The early warning signs were there. On 28 September, @Charles_SEO posted that Ahrefs, Semrush and all rank trackers were "bugging out BIG TIME", showing user-generated content and YouTube on page one. An r/SEO thread picked up the same pattern.

Morningscore says Google also truncated results to its automated searches from 24 September, with about 60% truncated on 30 September and 1 October. It admitted that "recording them as real ranking drops was on us."

How the Major Rank Tracking Tools Are Responding

  • Semrush has been seeing poisoned results since late summer and double-checks them, according to Glenn Gabe.
  • SE Ranking says fixes are in, but about 2% of tracked results are still affected.
  • Sistrix now publishes only results that pass several checks and has turned off on-demand updates. It says its top 10 data and Visibility Index remain reliable.
  • AccuRanker says Google tightened things again on 15 October, mostly on mobile, but both desktop and mobile were back under 1% by 17 October.

Data providers are now competing on accuracy. SERP data company cloro published its own benchmark for 16 to 18 October, so treat it as a vendor claim: it scored itself 98.0% correct, against 83.4% for Oxylabs, 65.9% for SerpApi and 33.1% for DataForSEO. Separately, DemandSphere found that 11% of its daily rank checks returned wrong results.

Who Is Google Really Targeting?

The likely targets are AI scrapers and SerpApi rather than SEO tools specifically. Google amended its lawsuit against SerpApi after the first complaint was dismissed in July, PPC Land reports. Rank trackers send automated searches that look a lot like scraping, so they're caught in the crossfire.

Not everyone is convinced it's deliberate sabotage. On Hacker News, vgeek asked whether the results are "poisoned or are they simply taking more drastic steps to maximize their earnings per mille", while warpspin said the SEO industry "has always been pretty hysterical."

Why This Matters for Brisbane Businesses

If you pay for SEO, you probably see ranking reports from a third-party tool. Over the past six weeks, some of those reports may have shown drops that never happened in real search. Making decisions off a bad day of data, such as rewriting pages, changing providers or cutting budget, can do more harm than the drop itself.

Recommended Workflow for Reading Ranking Reports Right Now

  1. Don't react to a one-day drop. As @hassanazharkhan put it, a one-day crash is "a coin flip on whether it's real."
  2. Check Google Search Console first. It shows clicks, impressions and average position from Google's own data, so it isn't affected by poisoned results.
  3. Look for a trend over several days. Most poisoned results recovered within three days in Nozzle's data.
  4. Ask your tool provider how they're filtering bad data. Most major vendors have published updates on this.

Search Console has its limits, though. It has no competitor data and no breakdown for AI Overviews or AI Mode, so third-party trackers still fill a real gap.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a poisoned SERP?

A poisoned SERP is a search results page Google serves to a suspected scraper that looks complete and normal but has the usual sites swapped out. Unlike a captcha or a block, it's hard to spot because nothing looks broken.

Did my rankings really drop in late September?

Not necessarily. Poisoned results peaked at about 25% of pages Nozzle judged between 27 and 29 September. Compare the drop against Google Search Console before assuming it's real.

Is my rank tracker still reliable?

Most major vendors say they've added checks. SE Ranking reports about 2% of tracked results still affected, and AccuRanker says it was under 1% by 17 October. Sistrix says its top 10 data and Visibility Index remain reliable.

Can I just use Google Search Console instead?

Search Console is the best check on your own performance, but it has no competitor data and no AI Overviews or AI Mode breakdown. Use both, and treat Search Console as the source of truth when they disagree.

Final Recommendation: Trust Trends, Verify Drops

Rank trackers are still useful, but read them with more scepticism than before. Treat sudden one-day drops as suspect, confirm them in Search Console, and base SEO decisions on trends over several days rather than a single bad report.
