Short answer: The latest AI search vs Google search statistics show that Google still sends most search traffic in Australia, with 87.61% of search-engine referrals in October 2026. But AI search is now mainstream. 58% of Australians aged 14+ use AI tools, and 36% of Australian online searchers start at least one query a day with an AI assistant.

Will AI Replace Google Search? What the 2026 Data Shows

Most "AI search vs Google" roundups quote global or US data. This one leads with Australian sources (Statcounter Australia, Roy Morgan and YouGov's Australian sample) and uses global studies only for context. Every figure is linked to its source and dated, because each study measures something different: referrals, visits, prompts or survey answers. They are not one tidy market-share number, and that's the first thing to understand.

The pattern is the same in every row. AI is big in usage and small in clicks, and Google is still where most of the traffic comes from.

7 steps Australian businesses should take, based on the numbers

1. Keep Google as your foundation, and don't ignore Bing

In October 2026, Google had 87.61% of search-engine referrals in Australia and Bing had 9.4% (Statcounter Australia, Oct 2026). Worldwide, Google had 91.05% and Bing 4.8% (Statcounter worldwide, Oct 2026). In other words, Bing's share in Australia is close to double its global share. Copilot draws on Bing, so verify your business in Bing Webmaster Tools and Bing Places as well as Google.

2. Protect your local and Maps visibility first

For local intent, AI has barely moved the needle. When Australians are finding a local place, 36% usually start with a search engine and 25% with a maps app. Only 4% start with an AI assistant (YouGov, 2026). For a Brisbane tradie, clinic or café, your Google Business Profile, reviews and suburb pages still do the heavy lifting.

3. Answer specific questions directly on your pages

Questions are where AI is winning ground. 23% of Australian online searchers usually start with an AI assistant when they ask a specific question. Among Australians who use AI to search, half (50%) use it to get a direct answer, 37% to summarise information and 35% to compare options (YouGov, 2026). Put a clear two-to-three-sentence answer at the top of each service and FAQ page, so AI tools and Google can both quote it.

4. Optimise for ChatGPT first, but not only ChatGPT

ChatGPT leads in Australia, but less than you might think. It sent 44.19% of AI chatbot referrals in Australia in October 2026. Google Gemini sent 26.85%, Microsoft Copilot 12.1%, Perplexity 10.8% and Claude 6.06% (Statcounter AI chatbot share, Australia, Oct 2026). Roy Morgan's survey shows the same order. 10.5 million Australians (45% of those aged 14+) use ChatGPT in an average four weeks, against 5 million for Gemini and 4 million for Copilot (Roy Morgan, 2 Jun 2026). Check how you appear in at least three assistants, not just one.

5. Make your content easy to verify

AI still has a trust gap in Australia. 63% of online searchers trust information from search engines, compared with 39% for AI assistants (YouGov, 2026). Australians often check AI answers too. Among AI searchers, 31% most often click through to the links the AI supplies and 26% compare the answer with other sources. Only 15% stop at the AI answer. Clear sources, real data and named authors make you the page they click to check. Publishing your own data helps here, as covered in why original research can strengthen SEO and AI search authority.

6. Measure AI referrals separately, and treat them as a floor

Across 16,661 websites, Google organic clicks fell 15% year on year. The median local and professional services site lost about 20% (SEOcrawl AI, 23 Oct 2026). Over the same period, AI-referred sessions grew about 45%. Even so, AI sends only 1.25 visits for every 100 from Google organic. That count is a minimum. App visits without a referrer, and clicks from Google's own AI Overviews and AI Mode, aren't counted as AI. Set up a separate AI channel in GA4 and track it against Google organic every month.

7. Check what AI says about your business

In a US-based Small Business Expo survey of 3,608 small business owners, 33.9% said they had noticed a traffic decline that they believe is linked to AI-generated answers. 14.8% said AI-powered search had shown incorrect information about their business (Small Business Expo, 29 Sep 2026). The survey records owners' perceptions and doesn't prove that AI caused the declines. Still, it's a good reason to ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot about your business every quarter and fix any wrong details at the source.

What the global numbers add

Global data supports the same picture. Wix's Similarweb-based tracking found AI search was 9.2% of search traffic compared with Google in Q1 2026, up from 7.8% a year earlier. AI visits grew 42.8% year on year, compared with 2.4% for Google (Wix, 30 Apr 2026). Ahrefs estimates that ChatGPT handles about 12% of Google's volume for things people traditionally searched on Google, but that Google sends 190x more traffic to websites (Ahrefs).

AI is also growing inside Google itself. Comscore found AI Overviews appeared in 39.4% of US desktop Google searches in June 2026, up from 25.8% in July 2025 (Search Engine Land, 22 Sep 2026). We couldn't find an equivalent public figure for Australia.

How many people use AI as a search engine? YouGov classed 72% of its Australian respondents as AI searchers, meaning they start at least some queries with an AI assistant. Only 16% of those AI searchers call it their starting point, and 43% use it alongside other sources (YouGov, 2026). So AI is an extra step in the search journey. It hasn't replaced Google.

FAQs

Is AI search better than Google Search?

What is more popular, ChatGPT or Google?

Google, by a wide margin. In Q1 2026, Google received about 250.8 billion visits worldwide, compared with 27.4 billion for all AI search platforms combined. Google also sends far more traffic to websites.

Which search engine has a market share of 92%?

What is the #1 search engine in the world?

Google. It led Statcounter's worldwide search-engine rankings in October 2026 with 91.05%, well ahead of Bing on 4.8%. Google also leads in Australia.
